By: Heather Gordon, global leader of the segment of small and medium enterprises at Microsoft.

There are around 400 million small and medium enterprises (PyMEs) in the world, which represent 65% of global employment and up to 70% of GDP. Almost all companies today are experimenting with digital transformation in their own unique rhythm. If the pandemic of COVID-19 accelerates the rate of adoption of technology for many people, only 17% of companies can be considered “early adopters”. Los early adopters are 100% more likely to see high growth in income and four times more likely to be positive about their prospects compared to those who are late in adopting new technologies.

When we observe the data on small and medium-sized companies, we find that most of them fall into the category of what we call “followers of technology”, which only implement new technologies when there is a competitive advantage or when new technology can offer a beneficio comercial probado y verificado. In today’s blog, we will deepen the value for clients of PyMEs to become one of the first adopters.

A note on terminology: throughout this blog, I will compare the statistics and attributes of the “early adopters” with a group that we call “retarded in technology”. The last one is a term that covers both cautious followers who only adopt technologies of common use with proven benefits, as well as low adopters who are not interested in new technologies until necessary.

The value of early adoption

As mentioned earlier, our study found that companies with an early adoption mentality are twice as likely to report high revenue growth. It is probable that they are led by executives who are confident in their function and are optimistic about the change, and these companies are also four times more likely to be positive regarding their commercial prospects.

How to detect an early adopter

We see this more often among the executives millennial29% of those who identify themselves as “technophiles”, compared to 20% of the older cohorts.

Another recurring characteristic of the first users is the magnitude of investment in technology. The first users have the largest budgets for technology as a proportion of their income and are twice as likely to invest more than 10% of their income in technology.

Adoption of technology and CSR/ESG objectives

Almost all PyMEs now identify RSE/ERG objectives for their business, and technological PyMEs stand out even more among their peers in establishing and measuring clearly these objectives. 82% of early adopters use CSR/ESG specific evaluations to inform about these objectives annually, making them three times more likely to do so than technology laggards.

Adapter water focus

The early adopters are particularly ambitious with respect to their implementations in the cloud: 42% describe their implementations of technology today as the majority of them in the cloud, compared to only 8% of the laggards in technology. And as the leaders prioritize more and more the objectives of sustainability, the partners can help them to adopt an approach with demonstrable benefits in this area. The leaders of all segments plan to expand their implementations in the cloud in the future.

According to Analysys Mason, technology spending by SMEs will increase to 1.2 billion dollars by 2023, and early adopters will have more appetite for technology, bigger budgets and more desire to work with partners. This presents a double opportunity for partners: to reach existing technologically advanced PyMEs with customized solutions and help new clients adopt this mentality and boost their growth. To effectively align your practice with the attitudes of SMEs, we encourage you to explore the full study and stay tuned for the next blog entries on this topic.
