Plenary support at the headquarters of the Artificial Intelligence Agency

Tenerife’s bid to host the headquarters of the Spanish Agency for the Supervision of Artificial Intelligence receives a new award. The five political groups with representation in the Cabildo de Tenerife (PSOE, Ciudadanos, CC, PP and Sí Podemos) supported yesterday in plenary this initiative, presented last day 20 to the central Government, which would convert the Island into the first region of Europe and host a national entity that monitors the algorithms that permiten a las máquinas tener capacitas humanas, la base de la inteligencia artificial.

The geostrategic position of Tenerife, the development of plans and infrastructures that use artificial intelligence, the contribution of quantum superordenadores Teide HPC and Anaga -between the most powerful in Europe-, the network of digital communications, the fiscal advantages, a large plant hotelera y de instalaciones para congresos y el soporte que brinda la Universidad de La Laguna.

A great challenge of technology

This technology, still in doubt but with a potential penetration in all sectors, from social to economic, represents an enormous challenge for humanity. The entity will control the impact of artificial intelligence on the Spanish society and the need to guarantee unuso correcto. In this sense, it will have as its main mission to minimize the risks that these algorithms bring in areas such as security, privacy and personal health, as well as fundamental rights.

Oportunidad de «incalculable magnitude»

The motion defines artificial intelligence as a «ability that presents opportunities of incalculable magnitude for any industry, with the creation of services and innovative digital products». That’s the reason why Pedro Martín, president of the Cabildo tinerfeño, apuesta por esta «oportunidad», pues supondría «un impulse para el futuro». The insular mandate considers that Tenerife has “sufficient arguments” to bet on the Spanish Agency for the Supervision of Artificial Intelligence, sobre todo porque “it could begin to operate from now on the island thanks to the infrastructures we have and the advances we have achieved by example in the expansion of the digital fiber and the connections with the rest of the world».

Coalition Canaria se allegra pero…

Coalición Canaria gathered institutional support but launched some criticisms of the insular government, formed by PSOE and Ciudadanos. The nationalist spokesperson, Carlos Alonso, pointed out that “Pedro Martín has passed on criticizing that the Cabildo collaborated in the launch of satellites, something that he did at the beginning of the mandate, a pedir que Tenerife acoja la agency”.

El Partido Popular, the other of the main opposition formations, believes that «Tenerife has the conditions and resources sufficient to opt for that candidacy». El consejero popular Manuel Fernández misses «the leadership» in the insular government team «at the time of postulating a este type of national and international candidatures» and « this leadership at the time of que Tenerife tenga clara qué priorities tiene en la installation of this type of organisms» «In the last few months we have seen how Tenerife wants to opt for the European Tourism Agency, the headquarters of the National Volcanological Center or the headquarters of the Spanish Space Agency».

Sí Podemos Canarias clothes the candidacy based on the fact that “the tendency to decentralize the state offices contributes to the development of our Archipiélago and, in this specific case, to the impetus of the I+D+i industry in our island”. The spokesperson of the insular coalition of lefts in the insular corporation, María José Belda, considers that «a measure of this kind must help mainly the creation of qualified job positions, which bring value added to the economy, stable and of quality for la población de nuestra Isla, contributendo a potenciar un marco laboral al que puedan acceder todos los perfiles de tan alta formation que tenemos en Tenerife».

The motion approved with the support of all political forces remarks that «Tenerife has maintained a technological vanguard» and as an example the Plan Director Turístico de Inteligencia Artificial. “This plan is the primer of a tourist destination in all the Spanish territory, so it will serve as an innovative and technological lever in Tenerife and as a basis for jointly promoting concrete action plans with different sectors of economic activity”. It also underlines the availability of «key» infrastructures in the field of artificial intelligence such as the Teide Astronomical Observatory, which is «one of the majors in Europe» and «has played an important role in the career of scientific research since the 60s» .

Alta velocidad de las communications

Another of the great advantages of the island is the network of high-speed digital communications thanks to the submarine fiber optic cables with direct connections to Europe, America and Africa.

Capacity to host events of all types

In addition, the Tenerife Convention Bureau, part of Turismo de Tenerife, offers information and advice on the organization of congresses and conventions on the island.

Un sistema universitario «consolidado»

The motion of the insular corporation also highlights «a university system completely consolidated». It indicates that Tenerife has “prestigious” research centers and “a multitude of experiences in scientific activities, research and international innovation”. “Thus, the University of La Laguna has been established as one of the standards of training in the field of artificial intelligence, thanks to the programs and infrastructures that offer an unparalleled practical perspective”, concluded the motion approved yesterday in the plenary session of the Cabildo Tinerfeño.
