More than twenty years ago, when mobile phones broke into our lives, the aviation sector saw many reticences that these devices were used by passengers. According to what was said at the time, water handling could interfere with piloting devices and, therefore, put the security of the whole world at risk.
Unas decades later, the restriction of electromagnetic devices is still in force and the mobile phone is still at the point of departure of the crew, especially during take-offs and landings. De hecho, son los momentos en los que el usuario would have the possibility of using it, puesto que después, en pleno vuelo, the conventional coverage would be non-existent.
We could understand that, today, the regulation of the use of mobile phones on board an airplane corresponds more to a preventive question than an effective one, since the electromagnetic signals with which mobile phones work are not in the same range of frequencias que el sistema de navigation del avion.
“The mobile phones are still sending and receiving them, but the technology used has improved a lot,” explains Jaume Comelles, professor and director of the department of signal theory and communications at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. “With the advances in actual technology, it can be easily avoided that mobile waves interfere with aircraft systems,” he added.
Even so, “no se puede descartar por completo that some signal from the plane could be interfered with by a mobile device, the probability is really low,” he added.
Sin embargo, the manufacturer and marketer of Boeing airplanes describes on its website the effects that certain electronic devices have had on the aviation systems during the flight.
The company includes in the list of ‘suspicious’ portable computers, audio players or recorders, electronic games, mobile phones, compact disc players, electronic toys and laser pointers.
In exchange, the aeronautical authorities have regulated the use of electronics inside the plane to the point that, for example, in Europe it is possible—since 2014—to travel with devices turned on during the entire flight.
In the work, he explained that a member of the crew confessed one day that if he was allowed to speak on the phone, it would be inconvenient for the air staff, since the whole world would be immersed in his conversation on video and the attention of the members would be insufficient.
In this sense, the psychologist Daniel Valentí thinks that the behavior of the passengers with the possibility of having the mobile phone in the hands in full disassembly would be very different from the one we have today.
