The 3D image and artificial intelligence will improve the prevention of accidents in construction

COMSA, Beamagine, la UPC y Sensofar Medical use the vision 3D y la artificial intelligence for the prevention of accidents in the construction sector.

The PROVIDENTIAL project has developed an investigation to improve the digitalization of works with the objective of ensuring maximum worker safety.

The European Union has identified the construction sector, in particular, as one of the priorities to be subjected to digitization processes in the next few years, as it is the productive sector with the greatest labor accident in Spain.

The initiative has received funding from the Ministerio de Industria, Comercio y Turismo y de la Unión Europea-Next Generation EU, dentro del programa de apoyo a las Agrupaciones Empresariales Innovadoras, cuyo objetivo es digitizar la industria.

The construction sector presents a series of specific characteristics that are not produced in the rest of the sectors and that have a great impact on the prevention of labor risks. Algunas de estas circunstancias se resumen en que se trata de centros trabajo temporale con una confluencia de un elevado número de personas en un mismo centro trabajo, subcontrataciones de multiples de empresas, permanente rotación de los lugares de trabajo developed generally a la intemperie. Estas circunstances hinders labores en materia preventiva, tanto empresarial como de los técnicos y trabajadores de este sector.

Todo ello, hace que el riesgo en las obras sea elevado y que la actividad constructora se considere altamente peligrosa. Los índices de frequencia e incidencia de accidentes laborales por productive sectors, recogidos por el Ministerio de Trabajo e Inmigración (MTIN), confirman objetivamente este mayor riesgo en el sector de la construcción. Se trata de una incidencia confirmed a year tras año, como puede confirmarse en los índices históricos.

In this context, el proyecto PROVIDENTIAL has developed a proof of concept to acquire new knowledge needed para mejorar la digitalización de las obras con el objetivo de seguridad al máximo la seguridad de los trabajadores. The project consists of the exploration of risk in the field of construction through the incorporation of new technologies of 3D imaging and the fusion of data combined with processing based on artificial intelligence (IA) with the aim of optimizing procedures for prevention, monitoring and inspection of la obra y optimizar la inversión en prevención de riesgos laborales.

With this end, a combination of sensors has been selected and implemented that includes the 3D lidar image, the RGB image and the thermal image, which provides the capacity of detection in multiple environments (interior, exterior) and in different environmental conditions. Estos sensores se han combinado en una unidad compacta y se han adaptado para su funcción en condiciones de obra por parte de Beamagin.

Una vez adaptados, han sido instalatos en situaciones reales de obra gestionadas por COMSA i.e UPC-CD6 ha realizado las tasks de capture, annotation y procesado de datos, while que Sensofar Medical has contributed to the project with his expertise in regulations and risk analysis. Todos estos conocimientos, currently inexistentes, cannot be acquired in laboratory environments, because perception based on artificial intelligence needs to be trained in conditions of use, that is, a partir de datos acquiridos en obra, en condiciones reales.

More than the immediate need of the market, the project allows to adapt and evaluate very new technology and discover its benefits and limits in a market that is not digitized and that has great potential in terms of improving productivity, reducing revisions significantly presionales por parte de técnicos, a la objetivación de las decisions tomadas oa la detección early de errores o deviaciones, entre otros beneficios a largo plazo. The initiative, coordinated by secpho, has counted on the financing of the Union Europea-Next Generation EU and the project in support of the Agrupaciones Empresariales Innovadoras del Ministerio de Industria, Comercio y Turismo en la convocatoria 2021, cuyo objetivo es digitizar la industria.
